Truckers Unladen Liability Policies

The world of trucking and transportation can find truckers in many different situations, such as pulling an empty trailer (deadhauling), which happens sometimes between hauls. And, at times, truckers need to drive with no trailer (bobtailing). Both of these life events for truckers do require unladen liability insurance to be legal and have total asset protection. Let the experts at BHI Transport Insurance provide a free policy audit and new quote.

Unladen Liability: the short answer

Unladen liability insurance covers your liability if you injure someone or damage their property while your truck is running empty: pulling an empty trailer (deadheading) or driving with no trailer at all (bobtailing). It’s most common for leased owner-operators whose motor carrier’s policy only covers them while they’re loaded.

What unladen liability insurance covers

Deadheading

Liability while you pull an empty trailer between loads.

Bobtailing

Liability while you drive the tractor without any trailer attached.

Bodily injury & property damage

Claims from others hurt or whose property is damaged in an accident while you’re unladen.

Legal defense

The cost of defending covered claims.

Who needs unladen liability?

  • Owner-operators leased to a motor carrier
  • Drivers who regularly deadhead back to their home terminal
  • Truckers who bobtail to the shop, the yard or the next pickup
  • Anyone whose carrier’s liability stops when the load is delivered

Every policy is different. Your coverage depends on the exact terms, limits and exclusions in your policy, so BHI’s agents review them with you before you buy. BHI Transport Insurance Co. insures trucking businesses based in Florida and Georgia from its main office in Panama City, FL.

Unladen Liability FAQs

What’s the difference between deadheading and bobtailing?

Deadheading means pulling an empty trailer. Bobtailing means driving the tractor with no trailer attached. Unladen liability is designed to cover both.

Is unladen liability the same as bobtail insurance?

They’re related but not the same. Bobtail (non-trucking) liability generally covers personal, off-dispatch use. Unladen liability can cover you while running empty for business. The right one depends on your lease agreement. BHI will read it with you.

Does my motor carrier’s insurance cover me when I’m empty?

Often only while you’re under dispatch or loaded. Check your lease agreement, or send it to BHI for a free review.

Can I bundle unladen liability with cargo or physical damage?

Yes. BHI can write unladen liability on its own or as part of a bundled total asset coverage plan.
